AIMS/OBJECTIVES OF CLINICAL ELECTIVES FOR MEDICAL STUDENTS: 
Program Goals: The overall objective of a four-week elective rotation to medical students is to provide the knowledge and skills necessary to diagnose and manage diseases of the population in an extremely resource-poor international setting. Specific educational objectives are as follows: 
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES (BASED ON ACGME CORE COMPETENCIES): 

  • Medical Knowledge
  • Patient care
  • Interpersonal and Communication Skills
  • Professionalism 

Medical Knowledge: Medical students of final year must knowledge about established and evolving biomedical, clinical, epidemiological, and social-behavioural sciences and the application of this knowledge to patient care. 
Patient Care: medical students must be able to provide patient care that is appropriate and effective for the treatment of Malawi’s common health problems (malaria, HIV/AIDS, malnutrition, parasitic infection, diabetes, hypertension). 
Interpersonal and Communication Skills: Medical students must be able to demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that result ineffective in formation exchange with patients, families, and professional colleagues.
Professionalism: Medical students must demonstrate a commitment to carrying out professional responsibilities, adherence to ethical principles, and sensitivity to a diverse patient population. Rawalpindi Medical College is affiliated with all teaching hospitals recommended by WHO, UHS and PMDC in Pakistan and also has attachment with University of Louisville (Kentucky, US), Wrightington Wigan and Leigh NHS Trust (UK) since last two years. Many of our students have done their clinical electives rotation in these recommended universities and returned back with improved knowledge and skills. In future we have a plan to make affiliation with few more universities in abroad like in Glass cow In Sha Allah as soon as we will affiliate we will start clinical rotations of medical students over there. 
SOPS FOR CLINICAL ELECTIVES IN RMC/ ALLIED HOSPITALS, RAWALPINDI
These SOPs are aimed to provide an objective format for the students who want to do their electives in RMC/ Allied hospitals Rawalpindi.

  • Transcript from their related college/university.
  • LOR from their related college/university.
  • Approved application from the institution submitted to relevant hospital medical superintendent (MS).
  • If government allows, then refer to relevant unit for further approval from the Head of Department (HOD).
  • The medical students are allowed 2 to 4 weeks of electives, which may include vacation time.

Medical students are encouraged to choose from the following list of electives offered by the Rawalpindi medical college and affiliated hospitals.

  • Gastroenterology / Hepatology (CLD/HFH)
  • Critical care (CCU / ICU) HFH
  • Psychiatry.
  • Paediatrics.

SOPS FOR ELECTIVES FROM UNIVERSITY OF LOUISVILLE

All the students of final year will be informed for Elective rotations at University of Louisville through a notice that will be displayed on notice board.

  • A committee will be formed under chairperson of Principal RMC for international elective decisions.
  • Application will be submitted by the students and day / date will be decided for the students to fill a questionnaire.
  • Questionnaire will be evaluated by the committee and 03 students will be selected for 01 or 02 months.
  • According to the following criteria: Selected students will fulfil the following requirements as per policy of University of Louisville. No 2, 4 & 6 will be provided by RMC
  • Selected students must have health and malpractice insurance.

  • There is an application fees $ 100.
  • Nomination letter required from Dean of Medicine.
  • There should be minimum TOEFL score of 100. Site says waiver is not acceptable.
  • Official school transcript required.
  • Two recommended letters from faculty.
  • Student must be in final year of his/her medical education.
  • 4th year student will not be considered for it.
  • If student has already given USMLE exam should be preferred.
  • Academic record (75% attendance and other academic activities).
  • Immunization forms and laboratory reports required.
  • All the documents must be attached and send through online application.

Applications MUST be submitted a minimum of six - eight months in advance of your requested elective date to allow for processing and travel arrangements.
Electives are four-weeks in duration with a maximum of eight-weeks unless otherwise approved by the Office of Medical Student Affairs.
Students should arrive at least 48 hours prior to their scheduled rotation date.

This academic year (2016-2017), university launched a new OVISTA application program and requires a Student Nomination Form be completed before your students can apply for electives. As an affiliated partner, your university may nominate up to three medical students (per academic year) to apply for clinical elective rotations. To nominate your students, complete the attached International Visiting Medical Student Nominee Form and return it by email to mskeib01@louisvillle.edu To maintain the integrity of the program, students not listed on your nomination form who apply for electives will have their request denied. Open application dates are January 1-15, April 1-15, July 1-15and October 1-15 and it is highly suggested that students apply at least six months in advance noting that our academic year begins July 1st and ends June 30th. Elective placement cannot be guaranteed due to capacity levels, however, we will do all we can to match your nominees requested electives and dates with our open clinical opportunities.
SOPS FOR ELECTIVES FROM WRINGHTINGTON WIGAN & LEIGH NHS TRUST
All the students of final year will be informed for Elective rotations through a notice that will be displayed on notice board.

  • A committee will be formed under chairperson of Principal RMC for international elective decisions.
  • Application will be submitted by the students and day / date will be decided for the students to fill a questionnaire.
  • Questionnaire will be evaluated by the committee and03 students will be selected for 01 or 02 months. according to the following criteria:
  • Student must fulfil following criteria:
  • Student must be in final year of his/her medical education 4th year student will not considered for it.
  • All final year students must apply 6th month before starting of their electives in Louisville.
  • CV.
  • Two recommended letters from faculty.
  • Nomination letter required from Dean of Medicine.
  • Official school transcript required.
  • Financial support system must be good approximately more than 1000-1500 US $/ month.
  • IELTS must be clear.
  • Bank statement.
  • Complete vaccination, investigation required and medical fitness.
  •  Academic record (75% attendance and other academic activities)
  • Interview marks.
  • Dates of desired rotation.
  • At least 06 rotation in final year to be done by students.
  • Student should have basic reading of the selected specialty.
  • Only 03 students rotate for clinical electives in Washington Wing & Leigh NHS Trust once a year from affiliated college and overall each can rotate for 02 months.
  • Each rotation must be for 02/04 wks in one specialty it cannot be less than two weeks.
  • Completion of occupational health screening and questionnaire
  • Completion of confidentiality form
  • Completion of self-declaration regarding convections and police caution

Students need to contact the local UK embassy to see if this is the correct visa and then complete the application as per embassy requirement.

SOPs FOR THE MISSED TIME PERIOD IN RMC / ALLIED HOSPITALS DUE TO ELECTIVES
Students can compensate for shortage of attendance due to electives in Louisville University according to the following SOPs: Compensation for wards/ lectures attendance during their electives will be possible only after taking prior written approval from the HOD / lecturers of the current wards / lectures and Principal of RMC / Allied Hospitals
ON RETURNING FROM MEDICAL INSTITUTE AFTER CLINICAL ELECTIVES 
Students must take stamped transparency from HOD of the relevant department of electives and Dean of the university.
Student must submit a brief report of their activities / experience during their electives. 
Student must complete their clinical ward / classes that they missed during their electives and deposit assignment of missed lectures duly signed by HOD.
